At StrataPrime, we are strong advocates and users of Google Workspace. We have helped countless organizations, including those in highly regulated industries, design, configure and migrate their workforce onto Google Workspace. At the heart of it all, is the Chrome browser. This is where all collaboration and productivity take place for Google Workspace users.
Maintaining the browser’s security keeps users and data safe. In this article, we highlight eight tips for keeping Chrome browser secure.
1. Chrome Browser Cloud Management
This is a simple, no-cost tool to bring Chrome browsers under management. Browser policies and security controls can be applied and enforced across various device platforms and to user profiles so your organization is protected, even when users sign in outside of corporate managed devices.
2. Safe Browsing Technology
Google’s Safe Browsing technology warns users when they attempt to navigate to a site or download files that are unsafe. This is enabled by default on Chrome browsers. Admins can prevent users from disabling it and even enforce Enhanced Safe Browsing, the strongest level of protection in Chrome.
3. Enterprise Credential Protections
Chrome Enterprise Password Reuse detection and Password Checkup are two tools that help prevent identity theft. Alerts are created when an employee’s corporate credentials are entered into non-work websites or when they have been exposed in a public data breach. Admins can create rules to ask users to reset their passwords.
4. Critical Security Events
Through Security Reporting, admins can gain useful insights about threats and events that users encounter when browsing the web on Chrome. Reports can also be exported from Google Workspace to other Google Cloud or 3rd party products for analysis.
Google continues to extend the functionality of the APIs which can augment the log exports for customized reporting.
5. Keep Browsers Updated
Chrome has many built-in tools to keep browsers updated. These include: daily Version Report, Force Auto Updates and Legacy Browser Support. In addition, Chrome is known to patch zero day vulnerabilities quickly, mitigating risk to your organization.
6. Using Vetted Extensions
Extensions pose a large security risk that could lead to security breaches or data loss. Chrome has many tools to give admins visibility into the extensions that users’ use and to restrict those that may be used with corporate accounts.. These include: Usage Reports, Extensions workflow and Extensions details.
7. Context Aware Access
Leveraging zero trust security framework, Context Aware Access ensures only the right people, under the right conditions can access Google Workspace. Granular policies can be developed based on attributes such as user identity, location and device security status.
8. BeyondCorp Enterprise (BCE)
To take an even more proactive approach to security, organizations can deploy BeyondCorp Enterprise to protect data and enable data loss prevention. This premium solution is built into Chrome, so organizations can seamlessly implement it. We recently co-hosted a webinar with Google about BCE. Visit StrataPrime’s YouTube channel to check it out.
